Where to swim
The sand is best at the northern end, the run between Nature Beach and Siam Beach — that is where people actually swim. Walk south and it thins out and gives way to rock: good to sit on, not somewhere to get in. What makes it unusual for Koh Chang is the depth. The bottom drops away quickly, so the sea is still deep enough to swim in at low tide, when several of the island's other beaches turn into a long wade.
Rip currents, honestly
That same steepness deserves respect. Koh Chang gets rip currents, most often through the rainy months from about September to November, and they do not always announce themselves — the surface can look calm on a day the water is moving hard underneath. Look for a channel of choppier, discoloured water running out through the breakers, and treat a red flag as final. If you are caught in one, do not swim against it: it pulls you out, not down. Let it carry you until it lets go, then swim back in at an angle.
Sunset, without going anywhere
The whole beach faces west, which is why nobody here debates sunset spots. The restaurants sit on the sand and the sun goes into the sea in front of them, so the evening is a dinner rather than an expedition. Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel sets are rented on the beach itself, and the little island offshore is a reasonable paddle on a calm morning. From roughly April to October there is real swell here too — enough that people turn up with boards.
Everything is on one lane
The village runs along the main road with three short sois dropping toward the rocky part of the shore, and the newer LB Complex between the road and the beach. What you need is on that one stretch: an ATM, mini-markets open late, laundry, pharmacies, massage, tattoo studios, dive schools and scooter rental. You do not need a scooter to live in Lonely Beach — you need one to leave it. One thing to know before you arrive: the cannabis shops you may have read about are not what they were. Thailand made cannabis prescription-only again in June 2025: the shops that stayed open became clinics, and a purchase needs a prescription from a doctor.
Evenings, and how loud they are
The nights are what gave this beach its reputation. Bars like Ting Tong and Himmel run music loud and late, and a room on that side of the road is not a room for an early night. It is also quieter than the stories suggest — the scene never fully came back to what it was before 2020. Four hundred metres back from it, where we are, a busy night is a bassline rather than a crowd outside the door.
When you want to leave the lane
The jungle starts immediately behind the village. Tree Top Adventure Park moved to this side of the island in 2024 — ziplines and rope courses through the canopy, a solid half-day, with a minimum age of ten and height and weight limits worth checking first. Dive boats run from Bang Bao pier to the south for the reefs and wrecks of the marine park. Inland there are waterfalls and jungle trails.

Getting around
On foot
Everything in the village is walkable. The sandy beach is about twelve minutes; the bar street is 3–4.
Scooter
The practical way to see the island. Rentals are on our lane, roughly 200–300 THB a day. The hill roads are steep — take it slowly if you are new to riding.
Songthaew
Shared pickup taxis run along the main road between the piers and the beaches — roughly 150–200 THB from the ferry pier, less for short hops. Flag one down and agree the price before you get in.
Boats
Bang Bao pier, twenty minutes south, is the departure point for island-hopping, snorkelling and diving trips.
